Arizona is a wonderful place to view the galaxies. With Northern Arizona having quite low light pollution, our eyes are able to capture far more and vast celestial bodies.

Flagstaff is the city with the lowest light pollution which makes it the perfect local to deep dive into the universe. Flagstaff was designated the world’s first International Dark Sky City on Oct. 24, 2001. This year, Flagstaff was awarded the Prestigious Dark Sky Award from the Dark Sky International. The Flagstaff Dark Sky Coalition monitors new city builds, projects, and anything that would affect possible light pollution in order to keep our night skies clear and bright.
While it's a lovely bonus for us patrons of the city to enjoy such beautiful stars, there is greater reasoning behind this effort. Flagstaff is home to Lowell Observatory which was the place where Pluto was discovered, as well as the US Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station, and Camp Navajo. Each of these places need low light pollution for scientific research, military research and operations, and training. Included in these needs that the Coalition protects is astrotourism, and that's where we come in.
