Petrified Forest, Rt 66 & Meteor Crater

The Painted Desert and Petrified Forests are remarkable places on this planet that almost feels a little bit like time travel. At the time of its creation this was a lush fertile valley similar to that of the Costa Rican rain forests. As the continents drifted north, this area went through many evolution's of climates, preserved in geologic layers. The arid painted desert harbors is very little life due to the lack of water. It is because of this that there is no vegetation, we can see the colored soil layers of the Chinle formation. Scattered about our large segments of petrified logs. They come in all colors of the rainbow preserved and agates and crystals. This day includes lunch along the famous route 66 at La Posada's Turquoise Room. This historic Grand railway Hotel sits right across the street from the famous "Standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona" site of the famous Eagles song, "Take it Easy". We will also visit the stunning Meteor Crater. This is a site of one of Earth's more recent meteorite impacts dating back 61,000 years ago. It's a monumental crater that's over a mile wide.
